Cost can make a stress-free camping trip difficult, but planning is the key. There are many things to check, such as campsite reviews before going camping. With dispersed camping, there is no set location. Campers should find a spot in an area they like and camp there. This type of camping usually takes place on the National Forest or Bureau of Land Management land. Before camping, check with management offices or look in guidebooks. Camping in an RV is an excellent way to save money, but you must first decide what comfort level you want. Here are three categories of camping that can help you save money:
Full Hookup Camping
This camping type is the most expensive option, but you can still find bargains. Full hookup includes electricity, water, and sewer. However, some campgrounds also offer cable TV, telephone, and other amenities. This type is the most expensive form of camping, but it is also possible to camp on the cheap. Private campgrounds with full hookups may also offer partial hookups for a lower price.
Dry Camping
Boondocking is also known as Dry camping. This type is camping in the wilderness without any amenities. Boondocking is one of the cheapest types of camping since there are no utilities, clubhouses, or other services to pay for. Boondocking is a common practice on public lands, such as the Bureau of Land Management in western states. Boondocking is possible on national and state forests and other public lands. Many campgrounds are free or very inexpensive.
Boondocking and Dry camping are the most common forms of camping on BLM lands. I recommend purchasing a copy of Adventures on America’s Public LandsPublished by the U.S. Department of Interior. To find Bureau of Land Management (BLM) campground addresses and locations, click here. This information is also available on the Internet, but it is helpful to have a hard copy if you are not within range of a cell tower. It is also a good idea to bring a directory of the area.
Overnight Camping
Overnight camping is also known as free camping. It is for overnight stays only. Businesses and cities have rules for overnight parking in corporate and commercial parking lots. Unless there is a local ordinance prohibiting it, experienced campers know that some facilities are open to overnight campers. Many discount stores, truck stops, restaurants, and department stores offer free overnight parking. We’ve used Walmart, Costco, and Sam’s Club, as well as Flying J truck stops, Cracker Barrel, Costco, KMart, and Costco restaurants. Before parking overnight, be sure to get a permit from the operator.…
